Made it to the Start

My folks and I arrived at amicalola falls this afternoon, which is the unofficial Southern start of the Appalachian Trail. We are staying in a cabin a stones throw from the trail head.

The drive down was smooth. It’s a 10hr drive from St. Louis, and we had great weather the whole way through. I certainly felt anxious at parts, but this was expected. I’m excited, but there is a lot of unknown that lies ahead of me.

I’ll hike the 8.5 mile Approach Trail tomorrow, which includes 2,000ft of elevation gain to get to Springer Mountain, which is the official start of the Appalachian Trail.

I met Taylor and Freddi in line for dinner at the lodge this evening. I had a feeling Taylor was also going to thru hike. There is a 2-story map of the AT hanging on the wall of the lodge, and she was studying intently. Freddi is Taylors mom who is helping her get launched. Amazingly similar to my situation. We decided to dine together, which was wonderful. A very solid day 1.
