Nero Before Blairsville

Day 3, Saturday, 3/19 – I took Nero day today (near zero mileage). I hiked the 2.4 miles to Jarrards gap. Then had to hike at least another mile down to the trailhead where the folks picked me up. Unfortunately, I’ll have to hike up that side trail again tomorrow to get back to the Appalachian Trail.

We went to the outfitters at Neels gap so I could get some supplies. I got an inflatable mattress to replace the collapsible foam pad that I have been using. I was hoping I could get away with the foam pad, but it’s just too firm (and I only brought half of it). I also got a new pair of shoes, which I didn’t expect to get in the first 30 miles. I had to go up a size because my toes were hitting the front of the shoes on the downhill’s.

The folks took me to the restaurant Hole in the Wall in Blairsville, where we all got some breakfast. it was a great stop, everyone seemed to know everyone and the food was delicious

Literally all my gear was wet, so we went over to the best western wear my parents are staying, and I laid out everything in the yard to dry out. Hopefully a nights rest gets me ready for hiking tomorrow.

Also, I have service now so I’ll update previous posts with some photos

  1. Rest up! Look like you got some valuable lessons already in the first few days.

  2. The new mattress looks much better to get the sleep you need each night.

  3. Hope the knee is feeling better!!

  4. Glad you were able to upgrade the bed man!!
