Siler’s Bald Shelter

Day 19, Monday, 4/4 – I got my trail name today! As I was about to leave the shelter, I was double checking for items that I may have left behind, which I always do. Sprite commented on this, and then coined the name “Double Check”. I love it. Double checking is a personality trait that I’ve had for as long as I can remember. Anytime I leave a place I’m making sure I didn’t leave anything behind. There’s also a running joke in the family about double checking. I’m quite convinced it’s a personality trait that I inherited from Dad.

Sprite and I hiked 18 miles to Siler’s Bald Shelter, which puts us at mile 196. We met up with Willow halfway through the hike. We had an awesome conversation. We talked personal struggles, goals for the hike, religion, etc. I really appreciate how many people are willing to have open conversations on Trail.

Willow lead the way the last 6 miles and was the motivation for us to get to camp. I rolled into camp exhausted and hungry. I claimed a spot in the shelter and started making food. I made a ramen bomb which is ramen, dehydrated potatoes, and 2 packages of tuna. I dumped a healthy amount of olive oil into the pot because I’m sure I didn’t eat enough during the day. After the food was cooked I felt nauseous and had to lay down. Immediately after I laid down I felt better. I think I just pushed too hard. I got up, ate dinner, and felt a whole lot better. The food was delicious, but it probably helped that I was starving.
