Eckville Shelter

Day 94, Saturday, 6/18 – Dog Fish’s knee was in bad shape this morning. It’s a pain that she has had in the past, but she said that this was a particularly painful episode. She tried to walk, but wasn’t able to put any weight on the injured leg. To avoid further injury, Birthday and I carried the packs so that Half Time could carry Dog Fish to the next shelter. Luckily, the shelter was 2 miles downhill, and there weren’t many rocks.

We got to Eckville shelter (2 miles to 1235) and met back up with Genie and Splitzy. Genie and Splitzy had decided to stay at the shelter because Splitzy had a rash on her leg that needed attention. Half Time, Birthday, and I also eventually decided to stay at the shelter. We wanted to hang with Dog Fish, and we are all planning on going into New York City together anyway, so it didn’t make sense to push ahead.

We spent the afternoon napping and playing cards. Dog Fish was a card dealer and pit boss in Las Vegas before coming on trail, so we played black jack with her. We then played a round of Oh Hell.

At lunch time, Dog Fish called Eddy, who gave us a ride the other day, and he picked up Wendy’s for us. Eddy heard that she had a knee injury, and offered a room in his home for her. She thinks she needs at least a week off trail, and is planning to make an appointment with an orthopedist.
