Day 131, Monday, 7/25 – I woke up at 6:30am, and it was raining. I grabbed my food bag from the tree, and ate a bagel with peanut butter for breakfast in the hammock. The rain made it harder to pack up, so I wasn’t hiking until about 8:00am. Aqua and I headed out of camp together.
It ended up raining all morning, which I was happy about because the rain was a whole lot better than the heat wave we just experienced.
We had a lot of steep climbs today, but they didn’t feel overly strenuous. We stopped for an early lunch at Holt’s Ledge. There was a fence preventing hikers from approaching the ledge because it was a Peregrine Falcon habitat. We were fortunate to see one fly overhead.

We climbed to the top of Smarts Mountain, which had a fire tower. We climbed to the top of the fire tower and got an amazing view of the White Mountains, which we are only 15 miles away from now.

The summit of Smarts Mountain also had a Fire Wardens cabin which had been repurposed as an AT hiker cabin. Aqua and I headed over to the cabin and ate some snacks, dried out some wet gear, and caught up on writing.
We hiked down from the summit and set up camp at Jacobs Brook (Mile 1779). I set up my hammock alongside the water, then cooked dinner with Aqua sitting on some rocks. It was a great place to camp.
