Day 82, Monday, 6/6 – It was wonderful waking up on the bank of the Potomac. There was a lot of wildlife along the river. I saw some large fish jumping, a few baby geese swim by, and I watched a crane fly onto a rock outcropping and catch fish after fish. I must have watched the bird catch at least 5 dozen small fish.

With my heel, and his sore throat, Half Time and I hiked out slow today. We came across a map next to a trailhead and came to realize that we had left West Virginia, and had entered Maryland. If there was a sign at the border, we must have missed it.

We took a break at lunchtime in Gathland State Park. There was a lot of Civil War history information placed around the park.

For the most part, my heel didn’t cause me trouble, but I can tell it’s still hurt. We hiked 16 miles to Dahlgren Backpack Campground (mile 1043). It’s a state run campground with flush toilets and hot showers.
