Broadway’s Bungalow Night 1

Day 103, Monday, 6/27 – I woke up at 5:00am, and started hiking around 6:00am. It was supposed to rain early in the morning, but we were all packed up before it started.

It ended up being overcast all morning, but it was still hot and humid. It turned out to be another day where I wouldn’t stop sweating. I would have welcomed the rain if it beat the heat. I got to a shelter at lunch time with Genie, Splitzy, and Frodo. The minute we got to the shelter, a heavy rain came through. We couldn’t have timed the shelter stop better if we tried. Half Time and Birthday rolled in a half hour after it had been raining, and they were soaked. We all hung out in the shelter for a while waiting out the weather. We played Bean Boozled to pass the time.

I hiked 20 miles to Bear Mountain Inn (mile 1406). Broadway, who was taking a few days off to recover from plantar fasciitis, met us with a rental car, pizza, watermelon, and Gatorades. We knew she was picking us up, but the dinner was a wonderful surprise, and a great way to end the hike. We ate the pizza and fruit on the sidewalk next to the parking lot.

Broadway then drove Half Time, Birthday, Genie, Splitzy, and me into New York City. It was bizarre driving into a city that clearly wasn’t a trail town. I haven’t been to a city this big since Asheville NC.

We got to Broadway’s apartment, and I found that my replacement pair of shoes had been delivered. The before and after is comical, my shoes were just about shredded. Fortunately, the shoe company replaced the shoes for free because the tread essentially fell off the shoes.

We all showered and got laundry started. Broadway shared her wardrobe so we’d have some loaner clothes. I laid on the floor and passed out immediately.

I woke up after an hour of sleeping on the floor, and heard Broadway saying that her brother was expecting a child, so she’s going to be an aunt again! I had another apple hat that mom had made, so I gifted her the hat to give to the baby. I slept the night on an inflatable mattress with Birthday.

  1. Congratulations, Aunt Broadway!

  2. Love that your mom’s knitting is making appearances on the trail! I still have the sweater she knit Viv when she was a baby. Means so much to me.

    1. The hats have been a real hit! There’s nothing quite like a handmade gift
